Transgender actress BB Gandanghari took to Instagram this morning to address a message sent to her—through her sister-in-law Mariel Padilla—from entertainment columnist Ricky Lo.
In the said message, Lo referred to Gandanghari as “Rustom” and used the “him” pronoun as opposed to “her”, her preferred pronoun.
Gandanghari then posted the message on Instagram with the caption “#misgendered... 💔” and proceeded to define the term for her followers.
“For people who are transgender, non-binary, or gender nonconforming, coming into their authentic gender can be an important and affirming step in life,” BB explained. “Sometimes, people continue to refer to a person who is transgender, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming using terms related to how they identified before [the] transition.”
“Misgendering occurs when you intentionally or unintentionally refer to a person, relate to a person, or use language to describe a person that doesn’t align with their affirmed gender,” she added. “For example, referring to a woman as “he” or calling her a “guy” is an act of misgendering.💐”
Gandanghari then mentioned Lo’s Instagram handle, saying she is not allowing anyone to misgender her and call her by her former name while mentioning that her preferred pronouns are “she” and “her”.
Netizens had different reactions to Gandanghari’s post. While some praised her for the post, some believed that it was not the right decision.
