Former beauty queen Maggie Wilson gave her piece on why she’s still working even if she has all the chance to stop and just indulge in her family’s wealth.
Maggie married Victor Consunji, a businessman whose family runs the distinguished construction and mining company, DMCI.
Having him as her husband, put Maggie in a position where she constantly gets asked the question: “why do you still work?”
Her one and only response and “honest answer” to that question is this: she just simply enjoys earning money on her own.
In an Instagram post she uploaded last Wednesday, May 27, Maggie, once again, let the public know her reason as to why she works hard as a business owner of her own furniture empire, Acasa Manila.
“I get asked all the time why do I still work? The honest answer is, it’s because I enjoy it.” she wrote on her IG post. “I could probably just sit back and enjoy my current life’s pleasures but where’s the fun in that? For me, that’s boring.”
She said that the only time she will probably stop working is when she can no longer do it.
“I started working and earning my new own living at age 14. I’m 31 now. I have been working for more than half of my life and I don’t see myself stopping for as long as I am able to.”
This kind of mindset she says was instilled by her parents. Thus, she basically grew up being self-reliant and a hard-core dream chaser.
“I didn’t grow up wealthy. I come from a working class family. We were comfortable. I didn’t grow up with nannies, drivers or any kind of extra help.”
She continued, “Both of my parents raised my sister and I on their own like most people. Because of my background, I’ve learnt to do so many things.
“The same applies to my work. I’ve learnt to be flexible. I try my damn hardest not to complain. If I need to sweep or vacuum the floors, carry or move around heavy items, cook, organise or learn a new skill, I’ll do it. Nothing is beneath me.”
Maggie also mentioned that despite having all the means now, she still chooses to stay determined and go after her goals in life.
“Earning a living is no joke. Money doesn’t grow on trees. Even if you’re not “hungry” literally, always stay hungry.
“Ok, I’ve written a lot already but one last piece of advice. NEVER EVER live outside of your means.”
She then recalled the days when she was still starting to work and showing up at work means braving the traffic and the horrible public transportation in the country.
“At some point in my younger working years, I knew what it felt like to not be able to afford certain things. When I couldn’t afford a car, I commuted. I have taken the bus, jeepneys, the MRT, tricycles, FX, you name it, just to get to work, and I made sure to always be on time.
“Imagine, we didn’t even have the luxury of grab or Angkas back then. I also could barely afford to buy myself a Frappuccino, that used to be such a treat for me if I had extra money.
Before ending her caption, she said that if you really want something you have to work hard for it because there’s “no instant gratification” nor “shortcut.”
“There is no such thing as instant gratification at work. There are no shortcuts. Hard work, experience and earning respect takes time but in the end it is worth it.”
