Isa iyan sa napag-usapan sa ginanap na press launch "Wheels of Life," a newest campaign ng Sunlife—ang katuwang ni Piolo sa pangangalaga ng kanyang finances over the years—that focuses on health.
"I was with Tito Dante Rivero the other day. He’s playing Gomez in GomBurZa and he’s 77 years old," panimulang kuwento ni Piolo. "I also remember asking Tito Boyet de Leon and Tita Sandy Andolong when we we’re shooting...
“At that time, I was contemplating of not just leaving, but to diversify and do other things. And they said, 'Why would you quit if you enjoy what you’re doing?' ‘Yun ang passion nila. And I was like awestruck with that. They’ve been in the business for decades and they still have the same passion, dedication, and energy.
“Then, fast forward the other day, Tito Dante...one of my first work was with him 25 years ago or actually more than 25 years ago in Esperanza and Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako which was in 1998. And now, we get to work again together. And I said, why do you still do what you do? Because you know, it keeps you active not just mentally but also physically.
“So, sa akin, 14 years down the road...I thought I’m gonna be retired at 40 because I’m a very simple person. Knowing that I’m already settled. I have Sunlife and I don’t have to worry about my future because I’m comfortable and I’m protected even my health.
“I don’t want to think that far, but there’s still offer. There’s still room for me in this business. You grow and practice what I do best. I guess, I’ll just stay on but on the side, I’ll do other things, other businesses, just to keep me busy.”
“As if, hindi pa ko busy, 'di ba?" natatawang pahabol niya.
"But yeah, as long as there’s good roles to take and good concept that you can develop. I guess, I’ll stay on.”
“I wanted to break out internationally in-terms of our film outfit. 'Yung Filipino films na mag-break out globally, that’s one of my goals. For us to be able to champion our content to the bigger market, international market because I think, that’s where we’re missing.
“I’ll gonna partner with different organizations to give us the better incentives or better projects for our films so that we can produce better.
'But personally, mahirap ah… mahirap kapag kumpleto ka na,” natawang sabi niya.
“Masaya naman ako, e. May kulang ba? But I’m just really happy, content and fulfilled with my life, with my walk, with my health...so there’s nothing else I can ask for. Peace and for everyone to stay healthy."
“Just be a good encouragement to people, inspire people and live a good life. The things I would want to ask for is I guess, to spend more time with my family, especially with my mom and my son, of course.”
“Pero sa career ko, I’m grateful that through the years, I never had to consider quitting just you know, because my movies (are not doing good)… " patuloy niya.
Besides, praktikal daw siyang tao kaya wala rin siyang utang.
"I’m the kind of person that is very practical. I don’t buy things that I cannot afford. Even if I have the money, I’ll make sure that I’ll save that first before I get something. So, I know na wala akong babayarang utang.
“Even if there’s nothing coming or if I’m not earning anything, I don’t have to worry about having to pay my loans. Through the years, that’s one of the reasons to stay afloat is because I’m always practical.
“Pero sa production, it’s really hard and how I am able to cope with that, I guess, the wheel of life.
“We’re happy that we’re back on track but there we’re years that we had to take a backseat and just assess if what we we’re doing is still okay. But of course, there’s still some investors that trusted us, so we managed to survive.
“Maraming risk in-terms of producing but I guess, ang importante is your passion and that people believing in your product. Just keep on going and you’ll never know when you hit the jackpot. Just like in Kita-Kita.
“Now, because of that, our outfit was able to thrive and we have more films like that.”
