Asia’s Songbird is also no stranger to discrimination.
On her vlog posted last October 1, Regine Velasquez gave her viewers a tour of her walk-in closet. Upon seeing one of her Louis Vuitton (LV) shoe pairs in her cabinet, she was instantly brought to the time when she was in New York, where she experienced discrimination at the LV store there.
The back story began when the singer-actress saw the shoe in a magazine she was reading. And when she had a chance to go to New York, she took the chance to find the shoes that caught her fancy.
“I went to Louis Vuitton, ’yon ’yong may pinakamalaking Louis Vuitton,” she narrated. “I went, I was so excited, kasi tour ’yun, e, so I couldn’t wait to go to New York to get this freaking shoes. And when I got there, nakita ko na, nandoon sa display.”
However, without even checking Regine’s feet, the manager told her that the shoe does not have her size. She then asked if she could, at least, try them on but was not allowed.
“Na-discriminate agad ang lola niyo so na-depress ako ng very, very light,” she went on. “I went to Neimann Marcus. [...] Si Neimann Marcus maraming branded shoes [at] nagwala ako doon. Ang ending ko, ang inuwi ko ay 20 pairs of shoes kasi na-depress ako.”
Regine was thankful that a black salesman went to her and asked if she needed help with anything because once again, she was being discriminated in the store. No one was helping her.
“Walang pumapansin sa akin, until this guy came to me and then he said ‘Do you need help?’” she said. “Parang maiiyak na ko, [sabi ko] ‘Yes, I need help.’ So lahat ng itinuro ko, binili ko talaga, so ang happy niya.
"Super happy siya samantalang ’yong ibang buwisit na nandoon, nagtitinginan sila, kasi ’yong mga ibang nagsusukat doon, walang binili, teh.” she added.
Asia’s Songbird then went back to the Louis Vuitton store, purchased shoes from Neimann Marcus on hand, to go back for the shoes she has been wanting to have.
When the salespeople saw that she had lots of purchases on hand, she was then allowed to buy the shoes she held in her hand as she told the story.
“’Yan ang story ng Louis Vuitton shoes na ito. [...] I don’t think you should feel bad pagka nadi-discriminate ka. You go back and, like, kick some ass, right?” she concluded the story.
