As social issues on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) community becomes the topic of the town in recent weeks, veteran gay TV host and hair salon magnate Ricky Reyes was asked during his charity event in Paco, Manila about his views on recent LGBTQ+ issues such as the comfort room issue and the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression Equality (SOGIE) bill, among others.
Reyes began trending on Twitter last Tuesday, September 10, because of his piece saying that gays should learn how to stay in their place. His statement was seen on a YouTube video uploaded by showbiz reporter Timmy Basil.
“Tigilan na ’yang kabaklaan,” Reyes said to the press in the CHILD Haus Foundation event. “Wag na kayong mag-bestida sa kalye kasi lalo tayong pagtatawanan ng tao. Dapat tumulong tayo sa kapwa para mahalin tayo ng tao.”
He then asserted that no one understands the gay community but the gay community themselves.
“Ang bakla, walang ibang makakaintindi kundi bakla lang talaga,” he said. “Kahit sarili nilang nanay, kahit sarili nilang tatay, sasabihin, ‘A, mahal ka namin anak naiintindihan ka namin…’ Shit! Mahuli ka ng tatay mo kumu-kokak ka, sipain ka pa ng tatay mo, ‘Day! Di ba?”
He added that the affairs of the gay community should be shared within them only, not showcased to other people.
“Ang mga affair ng mga bakla, dapat sa atin lang ’yan.” he voiced out. “Huwag na natin ipangalandakan sa tao. Bakit kailangan ko sabihin sa madlang pipol na ‘Uy. Intindihin mo nga ako. Bakla ako?’ Teka muna!”
The Philippine gay icon was also asked about his stand on the recent issue involving transgender Gretchen Diez, who was kicked out of the women’s comfort room and was then apprehended.
“Kung ikaw ay may nota, sa lalaki ka. Kung may kipay ka, sa babae ka. Finish! ‘Yun lang ’yun!” he said. “Nirerespeto kita bilang tao, nirerespeto kita bilang bading, pero lumugar tayo sa tamang lugar.”
He was then asked about those who have undergone operations to change their sexual identities.
“Kung nagpa-opera ka, kaso nga ang bakla, maski operada na, maski may kipay na, maski may boobs na, bakla pa rin ang utak, day!” he exclaimed.
He then questioned why some fight for transgenders to be part of women’s pageants when gay pageants exist while adding that why do transgenders go to straight bars and introduce themselves as girls when there are bars dedicated to LGBTQ+
“Doon ka sa lugar natin. Huwag mo ipagsaksakan ’yong sarili mo sa ’di ka naman matatanggap!” he said.
When asked if these issues are being exaggerated in the Congress and Senate, specifically when it comes to the SOGIE or Anti-Discrimination Bill, Mother Ricky had this to say:
“Let it be na lang. Basta ang bakla ay bakla. Ang bakla, maski ano gawin niyo, isulat niyo ’yan! Ang bakla ay bakla! Ang bakla, gilingin mo man ’yan, ang labas niyan, baklang hamburger!”
When it comes to same-sex marriage, he believes that marriage is only for men and women, while mentioning sacrilege in Catholicism.
“Huwag na,” he said. “Ang pagpapakasal, bigay na natin sa babae’t sa lalake ’yan, diba? Kung gusto niyo mag-union, edi mag-union kayo! Bakit ako? I’m in a relationship for 40+ years pero we don’t go out of our way to say ‘Kailangan namin magpakasal!’ No more!”
“May kasabihan tayo,” he adds. “‘You never, never rock the boat if it is not broken.’ ’Pag maayos siya, go lang, diba? Bakit kailangan ipagsaksakan eh ’di naman magulo? Ginugulo mo lang ang mundo, di ba?”
Online netizens voiced out their opinion on what Reyes had to say, some not taking the gay icon’s statements well.
Ricky Reyes thinking he is—or ever was—relevant enough to give his opinion on absolutely ANYTHING when his claim to fame is cheap, tacky haircuts.. I'm chuckling. I wouldn't take my dog to your shop, bih.— Miguel Poblador (@MiguelPoblador) September 10, 2019
BIGOTS: "Why not rEsPEcT Mader Ricky Reyes' POV? Isn't respect what you're asking for?"— Superficial Gazette 🇨🇳🇵🇭 (@SuperficialGZT) September 10, 2019
If your 'opinion' says "I think you should have less rights than me, and I'm okay with you being discriminated against, harassed, and murdered," then you can shove your 'opinion' up your ass.
Ricky Reyes lost in a discrimation case filed by his employee because he got cut off from work for being PLHIV. So now wonder he's fcking scared of SOGIE Bill dahil siya unang unang makukulong under this new law.— zakarii (@zachthebulldog) September 10, 2019
He's rich and privileged kaya walang pake yan sa kapwa niya bakla.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCMENT: Ricky Reyes does not speak for the LGBTQ community.— Momo 😽 (@hoyramona) September 10, 2019
Share ko lang that Ricky Reyes fired his employee after finding out he had HIV. No payment of lawful wages. Reyes also failed to pay for the employees PhilHealth and SSS for 11 years.— Tito Maroon (@maroontito) September 10, 2019
The employee filed and won the case.
Ganyan ka atrasado mag-isip. #SOGIEEqualityNOW pic.twitter.com/QLLKcgeYag
However, some praised Reyes for what he had to say about the LGBTQ+.
Bashing Rickey Reyes? Why? Coz reality hurts.— Mark David Mataverde (@FreechC) September 10, 2019
Y'all hate Ricky Reyes because you can't lure him into your culture of victimhood & imaginary oppression. Well, people who accept themselves, know their rights & limits DO NOT NEED to be validated by a make-believe, unconstitutional bill by Hontiveros. #NoToSogieBill— Gabriela (@gaaaaaaaaabbbb) September 10, 2019
