Today, September 24, prolific and ultra creative singer-songwriter Thyro Alfaro drops his first solo EP, Bagong Buhay Volume 1.
And it’s also a double milestone dahil he’s released it under his own music label, Diwang Records.
To the unfamiliar—dahil mas madalas siyang behind the scene—si Thyro (na ka-tandem noon ng equally talented singer-songwriter na si Yumi Lacsamana), is the brain behind such tumatatak songs as Sarah Geronimo’s “Kilometro,” James Reid’s “Randomantic,” and Nadine Lustre’s “Bahala Na.” He’s also written songs for Shehyee, Donnalyn Bartolome, and Yassi Pressman to name some.
That’s right after daw makita siyang mag-perform nito sa isang Christmas party ng Viva. Napansin daw ng visionary Viva Boss na nag-evolve na siya as a performer and songwriter at kaya na nitong mag-micro manage ng sarili niyang label. Doon na daw niya sinimulang buuin ang Diwang Records, na pinagsamang Daddy (him) and his daughter’s nickname, Wiwang.
As a sub-label boss, mas makaka-focus daw siya sa vision niya as far as music-creation is concerned. As for Diwang Records, this vision is to “really celebrate music.”
“How will I do this? My vision for the label is, it’s a collaborative label. Lahat ng songwriting proves, lahat ng production process, it will be in collaboration with the artists and producers...parang magsasaya lang kami every time na gagawa kami ng song. We wouldn’t pin down... hindi strict na ‘Dapat ganito yan, ganito...’ I want it to be free flowing. I want every Diwang session to be a pagdiriwang.
“Whether ang lumabas na music doon is pop or eccentric, that’s the goal. Parang it’s an avenue for artists to do what they love and then kami na back end ang mamrurublema sa kanilang production and stuff.”
May freedom, kumbaga. In short, walang pressure. Just keep on grinding and make good music.
At ang first output nga ng Diwang Records ay ang kanyang Bagong Buhay Volume 1 EP, which contains seven songs. All songs therein are products of the collective minds of the country’s topnotch musicians, arrangers, and music producers that include Thyro himself, Marvin Querido, Bobby Velasco and Teddy Katigbak.
Tracks include the upbeat and funky “Ginto,” a song Thyro wrote for his fiancée (that also features Davey Langit, Aikee, Lara Maigue, Toto Sorioso, Jeric Medina, Jinky Vidal, Frizzle Anne, Zion Aquino, Ian Dumaplin and Kevin Yadao on the choir sections). There’s also the smooth sounding R&B ballad “Loving You Good” featuring Paolo Banaga and Johann Mendoza; the soul-tinged “Wag Kang Ganyan;” the sexy R&B and pop-flavored “One More Time, With Love;” the pop-jazz and dance inflected “!;” and the groovy Jungee Marcelo-Thyro Alfaro collaboration “Wankatank.”
“So, gano’n po. Marami po. Also ’yung ‘Randomantic’ ni James Reid. When we were done with it, parang, ‘Akin nalang kaya ’to?’ Kaso kailangan, ‘Sige na nga.’ Madami po. Madami pong gano’n. Actually ‘Triangulo’ is supposed to be for another artist. Tapos pinagdasal ko ’yun na ano, ‘Sana barilin. Sana hindi n’ya magustuhan.’ Para amin na...which is hindi naman natuloy, so, amin nalang.”
In the same manner, game din naman daw siyang mag-interpret ng gawa ng iba. Hindi naman daw siya limited sa pagpe-perform ng sarili lang niyang kanta.
“Of course being a singer by heart as well, kahit ano po, kahit ano po ipakanta n’yo kakantahin ko yan.
In fact, in Bagong Buhay, there was one song there called ‘Wankatank,’ it was written by Jungee Marcelo. Kaya lang po ako nasama du’n, may mga pinalitan lang po akong words na parang pam-pabata lang po nang konti, parang ano ’yung pagkakasulat gustong- gusto ko s’ya. Pero may iba du’n na parang medyo period.
“So, sige pabatain natin konti. Tapos ayun and very close naman kame ni Tatay Jungee so we mutually agreed on everything. Sobrang smooth nu’ng ano, as in one pass, ‘Okey na yan. Sige pa- produce na yan.’ Gano’n po.”
Bagong Buhay Vol. 1 is now available for streaming in all digital music platforms.
